GREENWOOD, S.C. – The GVSU men's golf team opened their spring season in dominant fashion, shooting the lowest 54-hole score in program history as they won the Lander Bearcat Classic. The Lakers shot an 828 (-36) to win the event and set the new program record for a score by 12 strokes.
Results
The Lakers shot a final round of 271 (-17) to climb up from third-place into first. They tied Lander at -36 for the tournament, but they won the event on a tiebreaker scorecard. Behind those two in third was Flagler who finished at twenty-eight under. Barton finished in fourth at -26, and rounding out the top-five was Wingate at -21.
Drew Coble claimed the individual title after he birdied the final hole of play to break a tie with the second-place finisher. Coble ended at -13 with a final round of 67 (-5), sinking five birdies.
Nick Krueger finished fourth, carding a final round of 69 (-3), as he made five birdies and an eagle.
Charlie Cooley rose 14 spots to finish in a tie for 12
th at seven under. Cooley never bogeyed and made five birdies in his final round of 67 (-5).
Manuel Cue Vargas ended in a tie for 22
nd, shooting a final round of 68 (-4) with seven birdies, ending the tournament at five under.
Andrew Gwilliams made two birdies and an eagle, as he carded a final round of 71 (-1) to end in a tie for 52
nd at two over.
Bryce Wheeler made five birdies, including a stretch of four in a row in his round of 70 (-2), to end in a tie for 66
th at +6.
