Men's Golf In Third In Opening Tournament Of The Spring

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The GVSU men's golf team opened up their spring campaign today at the Lander Bearcat Classic. With one round complete, and the second round being suspended due to darkness, the Lakers sit in third place at -16.

Flagler leads the pack at -24, shooting -16 in round one, and -8 with a couple holes to play in the second round. Barton is in second at -19, three strokes ahead of GVSU. The Lakers shot 283 (-5) in the first round, then shot -11 through the second round until it was called. Host Lander is in fourth-place, shooting -14 for the event, and Wingate rounds out the top-five at eleven under.
 
Drew Coble and Nick Krueger are both tied for fourth after day one. The two are both eight under for the tournament. Krueger shot rounds of 70 (-2) and 66 (-6), making seven birdies in round one, and four more in the second round, along with two eagles. Coble had a first round of 67 (-5) and ended with one hole left to play in round two. On the day, he sank 11 birdies. Charlie Cooley is tied for 27th, shooting a 71 (-1) in the first round and not completing round two, as he ended at one under. He made two birdies and an eagle in round one, and he had made two before his second round ended. Manuel Cue Vargas is two strokes back of Cooley in a tie for 40th at one over. He shot a 75 (+3) in round one with two birdies, and he had made two birdies and an eagle in round two. Andrew Gwilliams had a 76 in round one, making one birdie, and he had four made birdies in the second round before it was ended. He is tied for 58th at three over. Bryce Wheeler is tied for 83rd (+7), as he had a round one score of 76 (+4). He made three birdies in round one and three more in the second round.
 
The Lakers finish out the tournament tomorrow by closing out round two, then playing one more round.
