Men's Golf Holds 11 Stroke Lead After Day One down in North Carolina

MONROE, N.C. – The GVSU men's golf team was down at the Ralph Hargett Memorial, looking to defend their title from a season ago. After day one of two rounds, they are on the right track, leading the event by 11 strokes, and having the top three golfers in the field.

GVSU shot rounds of 282 and 278, sitting at -16 after the two rounds. In second-place is Tusculum, who is 11 strokes back at five under. Wingate is in third, eight strokes back of second at three over. In fourth is Carson-Newman, who shot four over. Rounding out the top five is Belmont Abbey, who carded rounds of 288 and 297 to sit at nine over.
 
Drew Coble leads the field of 96 golfers, shooting rounds of 67 (-5) and 70 (-2), as he is at seven under for the tournament through two rounds. Coble made six birdies in round one, and five more in round two to hold a three stroke lead on second-place. In second is two Lakers, Nick Krueger and Manuel Cue Vargas. Both golfers are at four under through the two rounds. Krueger carded rounds of 72 (E) and 68 (-4), making five birdies and an eagle. Cue Vargas made nine birdies over his two rounds of 73 (+1) and 67 (-5). Bryce Wheeler is tied for 17th at one over, shooting rounds of 72 (E) and 73 (+1). He made four birdies on the day. In a tie for 32nd is Charlie Cooley, who carded rounds of 71 (-1) and 77 (+5), with seven birdies made.

The Lakers close out the tournament tomorrow with the final round. They are set to tee off at 9:00.
