Laker Baseball Opens 2024 Campaign Friday Versus Gannon

Grand Valley State, under the direction of first year head coach Jordan Keur, will open the 2024 campaign Friday (Feb. 23) versus Gannon. First pitch for the single 9-inning game is now slated for 4:30 p.m. at Athletes In Action Park in Xenia, Ohio. Saturday's single game will start at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday's twinbill will start at 11 a.m.

The Lakers return 10 All- GLIAC performers, 25 letterwinners, including 10 positional players that have played significant roles for three years and 13 pitchers who have combined for 42 career victories. In addition, GVSU returns 13 positional players that started games in 2023, including eight players that played over 90 percent of the total innings played and return over 85 percent of  every offensive category. Twelve pitchers return that tossed 372.2 innings and combined for 29 wins in 2023, while also getting back the services of six-game winner Collin Bradley who missed the 2023 season.

Senior pitchers Sam Leck and Nick Rutkowski, along with senior outfielder Kyle Nott were selected to the 2024 NCBWA All-Midwest Region squad. Rutkowski, a 2023 First Team All-GLIAC performer and a NCBWA Midwest Region Second Team honoree, tallied an 8-3 record with a 2.25 earned run average in 84.0 innings of work and 12 starts. He yielded 21 earned runs, struck out 57 and tossed five complete games, while opponents hit .236 versus Rutkowski.

Leck, who earned First Team All-GLIAC and NCBWA All-Midwest Region honors in 2023, recorded six saves in 17 appearances during his junior campaign. Leck tallied 24 strikeouts and yielded 23 hits in 24.2 innings of work. In addition, Leck recorded a WHIP of 1.50.

Nott is a two-time All-GLIAC performer and earned NCBWA All-Midwest Region honors in 2023. He hit .323 with 65 hits, 58 runs scored and 37 RBIs as a junior. In addition, he tallied an on base percentage of .435, stole 13 bases and led the GLIAC in combined hits (65) and walks (36) with 101. Nott also tallied eight doubles, five home runs and three triples.

First-team, All-GLIAC performer Nate Logan, who will play first base and right field, is one of the most prolific offensive players in the country and is moving into the top 10 of several GVSU career categories. Logan, who missed the final three weeks of the regular season with an injury, hit .315 with 57 hits, 36 runs scored and a team-best 39 RBI. Sophomore Ayden VanEnkevort will see action at second base and on the mound. VanKnkevort recorded 29 hits, scored 19 runs and drove in 19 runs as a true freshman.

Senior Connor Schuman will handle short stop for the Lakers after earning All-GLIAC honors a year ago. Schuman hit .319 with 58 hits, 32 runs scored and 31 RBI. All-GLIAC performer Jonas Gulbranson will get the call at third base after a standout sophomore season. Gulbranson hit .364 with 59 hits, 27 runs and 34 RBI in 2023. Utility performer Jake Rydquist started 39 games in 2023 and hit .309. He tallied 50 hits, scored 25 runs and drove in 22 runs. DH Conner McCormack, who missed a month of the season with an injury, was an All-GLIAC honoree after hitting .341 with 44 hits, 27 runs scored, 25 RBI and team-high eight home runs.

Brendan Guciardo and MacArthur Graybill will handle the catching duties again in 2024. The duo combined for 66 hits, 35 runs scored and 35 RBIs. Justin Mansager started 43 games in the outfield a year ago, collecting 46 hits, scoring 30 runs and driving in 21, while Logan Anderson chipped in 24 hits and 19 RBI in 99 at bats. Oakland transfer Ryan Dykstra will bolster the lineup in the outfield.

In addition to Rutkowski and Leck, the Lakers have a host of pitchers with significant experience. Bradley was 6-4 in 2022 with 49 strikeouts and a 3.04 ERA in 53.1 innings. Colby Phipps, Will Goebel, Mike Morawski, Al Thorington, Logan Wynalda, Josh Schell and Brendan Pierce produced 17 wins. Transfer Michael Riley, and redshirt freshman Owen Avery will make a significant impact on the pitching staff.
