GVSU Swim & Dive Increase Leads At GLIAC Championships

Grand Valley State made a big move on day 2 at the 2024 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships that are being held at the Holland Aquatic Center. The #4 Laker men, who are going for their 10th consecutive GLIAC crown, lead the way with 462 points, followed by Northern Michigan (324.5) and St. Cloud State (272.5). The #6 GVSU women are first with 499 points, while Wayne State is second (369), and Northern Michigan third (323.5).
 
Women – 
100 Fly – Senior Alysa Wager captured her second consecutive GLIAC title in the 100 fly, hitting the wall in 54.50, a GLIAC meet record and NCAA B cut. Sophomore Staci Nation hit the NCAA B cut and finished sixth (56.03), while freshma Kelly Shortfall finished eighth in a time of 56.49. Senior Sarah Puscas finished 13th(57.75).
 
400 IM – GVSU takes four the top six spots, highlighted by Katie O'Connell's back-to-back GLIAC titles in the 400 IM for the Lakers. O'Connell hit the wall in 4:20.53, hitting the NCAA B cut. Sara Alvarez hit the NCAA B cut and finished third (4:23.12), Gaia Tomaselli finished fourth and hit the NCAA B cut (4:24.33), while Vittoria Proietti also hit the NCAA B cut with her sixth-place finish (4:29.53). Olivia Geiger hit the wall 13th (4:35.85). 

200 Free – Sophomore Lucy Hedley hit the wall second and hit the NCAA B cut with a time of 1:48.33. Tina Winter finished ninth and hit the NCAA B cut (1:52.54), followed by Annabelle Nixon (1:53.62) in 11th and Angelica Angilletta in 15th (1:54.82).

3-Meter Diving – The Lakers scored 79 points on the 3-meter diving board and placed six among the top 10. Junior Maddie Kooistra finished second (416.45), Samantha Plough third (395.90), Sadie Huizenga in fifth (382.65), Carissa Wooley in sixth (379.60), Jessica McEachern in seventh (369.40) and freshman Macy Polasek 10th (343.15). 

400 Medley Relay – The Lakers' Vittoria Proietti, Sara Alvarez, Alysa Wager and Lucy Hedley hit the wall first in a GLIAC meet record, GVSU varsity record and NCAA B cut time of 3:43.16. 

Men – 
100 Fly – Junior Brennan Neitzel touched second (46.99) and hit the NCAA B cut, while Jona Finn Sue finished 10th in a time of 48.80. 

400 IM – GVSU 69 points in the event, taking four the top eight spots. Will Herwig finished second and hit the NCAA B cut with a time of 3:55.91, followed by Matthew Lane in third (3:56.16) and Jon Kantzenbach in fourth (3:59.28), who both hit the NCAA B cut. Freshman Milek Mathew finished eighth (4:09.59), Thomas Zoldowski finished 11th and hit the NCAA B cut (3:58.09) and Izak Zaplatar touched 13th (4:01.54). 

200 Free– Junior Matt Bosch dominated the 200 free, setting a GLIAC all-time mark, GLIAC meet mark, GVSU varsity record and hit an NCAA A cut when he touched first in a time of 1:34.53. Senior Roger Miret Sala finished second and hit the NCAA B cut with a time 1:36.58, senior Eric Hieber touched fifth and hit the NCAA B cut (1:37.17), junior Austin Millard was sixth and hit the B cut (1:38.11) and Carsyn Christoffel was eighth (1:39.66) with a NCAA B cut. Evan Scotto DiVetta hit the NCAA B cut with his 11th-place finish (1:39.11). GVSU scored 81 points in the event. 

400 Medley Relay – The Lakers' relay team of Roger Miret Sala, Andew Goh, Brennan Neitzel and Matt Bosch hit the wall first (3:11.57), set a GVSU varsity record and hit the NCAA B cut.
