Lakers Take on NCAA National Championships

Grand Valley State heads to Pueblo, Colorado to compete in the NCAA DII National Championships

PUEBLO, Colorado – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at Day one of the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Thursday, May 25th. The National Championships will be held in Pueblo, Colo. at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl. 
 
The Outdoor National Championships will begin on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (MT) with the men's decathlon followed by the beginning of the field events at 11:05 a.m (MT) and the running events at 4:50 p.m. (MT).

The Laker women are looking to claim their third National Championship title in Grand Valley State history after finishing as the 2022 and 2021 National Runner Up. While the Laker men are hoping to claim their second National Championship title for Grand Valley State after earning their first National title in program history in 2021. 
 
The men have 15 individual entries competing this weekend at the NCAA National Championships. Within Grand Valley State's 15 entries, nine Lakers are currently ranked with the Top 10, with two ranked as the National leaders in their respective events. Eli Kosiba currently holds the first-place ranking in the men's high jump with a personal-best mark of 2.25m, while Jonathan Rankins-James ranks eighth in the Nation with a best mark of 2.15m. Myles Kerner is the National leader in the men's shot put with a personal-best mark of 19.85m followed by Matt Thomas in sixth with a mark of 18.59m. 
 
Jacob Urban and Caleb Futter both hold a second-place ranking in their respective events, Urban in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 65.76m and Futter in the steeplechase with a time of 8:42.20. 
 
The Laker women head in the NCAA National Championships with 17 individual entries, with five women competing in two events. Grand Valley State has twelve competing Lakers ranked with the National Top 10 list, including two ranked as the National Leaders in their respective events. Judith Essemiah is the current National Leader in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 63.57m. The Lakers sweep the Top 3 rankings in the women's discus with Erika Beistle claiming first, Emma Richards second and Margaret Stevenson in third. 
 
Klaudia O'Malley holds a pair of Top 5 rankings heading into this weekend. O'Malley ranks third in the women's 1500m with a mark of 4:19.43 and fourth in the 5000m with a mark of 16:07.63. Natalie Graber holds a pair of rankings in the steeplechase (third) and 5000m (sixth)
 
The Lakers first event will begin on Thursday, May 25th at 1:05 p.m. (ET) with the men's pole vault followed by the women's hammer throw at 2:30 p.m. (ET). Follow along @GVSUXCTF or check out gvsulakers.com for more updates.
