Women's Lacrosse Readies For Two Ranked Matchups Out In Colorado

MESA, COLO. – The tenth-ranked Grand Valley women's lacrosse team returns to the field this weekend, as they traveled out to Colorado to take on two nationally ranked teams. The weekend starts out on Friday night at 6:00 pm eastern time, as they play #24 Colorado Mesa before taking on #8 Regis on Sunday at 1:00 pm eastern.
 
The Lakers are 1-1 on the young season, splitting their opening trip to Florida, defeating Flagler 14-12 before falling to Rollins 15-11. Maddy Champagne had a strong start to the season, as she won GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring eight goals and dishing out two assists in the opening weekend. She also picked up 10 groundballs and caused two turnovers. Kate DeYoung scored six times and added three assists in the opening weekend, while Sydney Stone and Maggie Hammer each found the back of the net three times. Molly Bursinger and Ashleigh Rothe both scored twice, while Hailey Crittenden netted one goal. Kaylyn Cater started in net both games, saving 16 shots, including a career-high 11 against Rollins.
 
This will be the opening game of the season for Colorado Mesa, as they come off a season in which they were 13-6, falling in the RMAC Championship game. The Mavericks return their top five-point scorers from last season, led by nine returning All-RMAC players from last year's squad. This will be the second all-time meeting between these two teams, with Mesa winning the only other matchup in 2019.
 
The second game of the weekend will be against the Rangers of Regis. Regis is 2-0 to open the season, defeating Lynn and Rockhurst in late February. They will take on Missouri Western State Thursday night in Missouri before traveling back to Colorado to take on GVSU Sunday. The Rangers lost to the Lakers last year in the Regional Semifinals, 12-11, giving them their only loss of the season. This year, Regis is led by Shea Murphy's 10 points through two games, while Lucy Johnson has eight points. In goal, the Rangers have split time between to goalkeepers, as they tow have combined for 10 saves to open the season. This will be the sixth meeting between the two programs, with Regis leading 3-2.
