Lakers See Two Individual Top-Five Performances

INDIANAPOLIS—The Grand Valley State swimming and diving teams saw two top-five individual finishes on the fourth day of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
The men's squad advanced swimmers to the championship and consolation final in the 500-yard freestyle.
 
Eric Hieber touched the wall fourth in the championship final of the men's 500-yard freestyle. He finished the race in 4:21.98 to earn a top-five performance.
 
Jon Kantzenbach took 16th in the consolation final of the men's 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 4:29.47.
 
Austin Millard also competed in the prelims of the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 19th with a time of 4:30.83. Hieber was the second-fastest swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 4:22.75 and Kantzenbach earned a spot in the consolation final, taking 11th with a time of 4:25.34 in the prelims.
 
Kantzenbach also swam in the prelims of the 200-yard butterfly. He finished 19th overall with a time of 1:48.34.
 
Keegan Hawkins swam in the 100-yard breaststroke prelims and touched the wall 23rd in 55.22 seconds.
 
The GVSU men's 200-yard relay touched the wall in 1:19.79, earning a ninth-place finish.
 
On the women's side, the Lakers saw Maddie Kooistra advance to the women's 3-meter dive championship final. She took third with a score of 475.90 and was within nine points of the champion. In the preliminary round, Kooistra was the third-best qualifier with 441.70 points.
 
Gracyn Segard, Jess McEachern and Nicole Carlson took 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively, in the 3-meter dive prelims.
 
In the pool, Delaney Wihebrink and Alysa Wager took 18th and 19th, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Wihebrink swam a time of 1:03.70 and Wager touched the wall in 1;03.88.
 
Lucy Hedley took 25th in the 500-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 4:59.72 and Katie O'Connell finished 36th in the prelims with a time of 5:02.24.
 
Gaia Tomaselli touched 29th overall in the 200-yard butterfly prelims with a time of 2:08.08.
 
The GVSU women's 200-yard freestyle relay touched the wall 19th overall with a time of 1:34.30.
 
GVSU wraps up competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. Prelims are set for a 10 a.m. start.
