GVSU Baseball Set to Open 2023 Season at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – The Grand Valley State baseball team opens up the 2023 season this weekend in a three-game series at Indianapolis at Greyhound Park. The Lakers kick off the season with a doubleheader against the Greyhounds on Saturday with game one starting at 11:00 AM with game two beginning 30 minutes after game one. Game three will be played on Sunday at 12:00 PM.

The Lakers finished the 2022 season with a 30-20 record and 13-11 conference mark. GVSU return 24 position players from last season and 11 players that appeared in 20 or more games. 
 
Junior Nathan Logan returns after earning All-American and first team All-GLIAC selections in the 2022 season. Logan led the conference last season with a .395 batting average and broke the GVSU single season record with 24 doubles. GVSU also returns outfielders Spencer Nelson and Kyle Nott who were All-GLIAC performers in 2021. Nelson hit .325 with 17 doubles and eight home runs, while earning an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award. Sophomore catcher and All-GLIAC performer Brendan Guciardo, junior infielder Connor Schuman, sophomore infielder Justin Ratliff and sophomore outfielder Justin Mansager also return after playing key roles last season.
 
The Laker pitching staff returns six arms who made at least five appearances last season. Starters Nick Rutkowski and Austin Brown return after earning All-GLIAC honors a season ago. Rutkowski made 10 starts and posted a 4.79 ERA, while striking out 41 batters. Brown made 11 starts posting a 4-3 record, while leading the team with 56 strikeouts. Senior Rylan Peets and sophomore Colby Phipps bring experience and depth to the starting rotation. In addition, junior Logan Wynalda and sophomore Allan Thorington will be major contributors for the Laker bullpen this season. Sam Leck also returns to bolster the bullpen after missing last season due to injury. GVSU welcomes 10 freshmen to Allendale this spring. Joining the freshmen class are five transfers that will look to make immediate impact for the Lakers. 
 
Indianapolis kicked off their season last weekend when they hosted Notre Dame College for a three-game series. The Greyhounds went 3-0 outscoring Notre Dame 66-9. Indianapolis was led by junior infielder Drew Donaldson who batted 10-15 on the weekend with 10 runs batted in and 11 runs scored. Sophomore infielder Easton Good and senior outfielder Brandon DeWitt each hit 7-14 at the plate with five runs scored. The offense drew 33 total walks over the three games.
 
The Greyhound pitching staff recorded 33 strikeouts over the weekend and walked just 11 batters, while allowing five earned runs. Junior Seth Spencer led the pitching staff with 12 strikeouts allowing just two runs off three hits in five innings pitched.
