ROMEOVILLE, IL – The NO. 1 ranked Grand Valley State women claimed a second place finish at the 2023 Lewis Crossover Invite on Saturday, October 7
th. The Lakers recorded an overall team score of 98 points, falling shortly behind No.3 Colorado School of Mines (49pts.) but defeating Lewis (130pts) and No. 4 Winona State (136pts).
After coming off an upset win last weekend at the Live in Lou XC Classic, The Lakers chose to only race a small group of women on Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois. Head Coach
Jerry Baltes stated, "We had a good group of women bounce back off last weeks race and put a great 6k race together. We are in a great spot as we get closer to the championship season."
The women's squad finished with six runners in the Top 50, led by senior
Klaudia O'Malley, as she was the first Grand Valley State athlete to cross the line, finishing third with a time of 21:06.2.
Kayce Rypma placed 16
th recording a time of 21:39.1, followed by
Madelyn Frens and
Taryn Chapko who finished back-to-back. Frens in 20
th with a time of 21:43.7 and Chapko in 21
st in a time of 21:44.5.
Maggie O'Malley,
Sarah May and
Landyn Howell rounded out the Lakers Top 7 score, finishing 39
th (O'Malley) with a time of 22:14.9, 41
st (May) in a time of 22:16.0 and 71
st (Howell) with a time of 22:42.0.
The Lakers will send a small squad to compete at the Muskegon Jayhawk Invite on Saturday, October 14
th before heading into the 2023 GLIAC Conference Championships on October 21
st. The 2023 GLIAC Conference Championships will be hosted by Michigan Tech in Houghton, Mich.
