Hedley Breaks Three Pool Records, Propels No.12 GVSU Past No.3 Indianapolis

10.21.2023

ALLENDALE, Mich. – No.12 Grand Valley State Women's Swimming & Diving convincingly upset No.3 Indianapolis 175.00-124.00 Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Pool.

The GVSU men, who are ranked No.6, pushed the reigning NCAA Champions, No.1 Indianapolis, to the absolute brink 152.00-148.00.

Grand Valley State head coach Andy Boyce said he nearly lost his voice from the excitement of the meet.

"I think the team really came together," Boyce said. "There was a lot of positive energy on deck, cheering each other on. My voice is even a little hoarse right now. It's fun when you can push the No.1 ranked team in the country to the last two events, so it was a good time."

Sophomore Lucy Hedley got the momentum started when she anchored the 200 Medley Relay on the freestyle leg with a come-from-behind victory to secure the first event of the day. Additionally, Hedley, who is the reigning GLIAC Swimmer of the Week after breaking a varsity record in the first meet, broke three pool records in the first home meet of the year, winning all of her individual events. Boyce said Lucy's strength training has helped boost her in sprint races.

"Yeah, Lucy again just rewriting the record book," Boyce said. "Another excellent meet for her. I think she's a lot stronger in the weight room this year than she's been in the past. She's really focused on that. That's helping with her speed and her sprinting abilities. We kind of recruited her more as a mid-distance swimmer and she's turned into a little bit more of a sprinter."

While Hedley's performance was certainly on display, she wasn't the only Laker processing winning results. Senior Sarah Puscas provided a strong pace during a victory in the 1,000 freestyle before turning on the jets for her final 50 yards to secure first place. Her final split was well under 30 seconds, the second fastest split of her full 1,000 yards. Puscas finished in 10:37.88, well over a second faster than her nearest competitor.

Helping to sweep the distance races, sophomore Katie O'Connell won the 500 freestyle by more than eight seconds. O'Connell, the youngest swimmer in the race, touched the wall in 5:06.88.

Freshman Vittoria Proietti won the 100 backstroke by more than three seconds, touching in 2:03.81. Sophomore Sara Alvarez dominated the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:06.81, almost 25 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

Junior Maddie Kooistra won the 3-meter dive handedly with a score of 279.22. Kooistra, who is the reigning GLIAC Diver of the Week, also placed in second on the 1-meter dive, finishing within five points of winning the category.

The women placed the exclamation mark on the day with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Annabelle Nixon, Kiersten Harmon, Linda Frick and Angelica Angilletta teamed up to tie the bow on an impressive upset victory. The relay touched the wall in 3:33.53, which was more than four seconds faster than the team who finished in second.

Hedley's new GVSU Fieldhouse Pool record in the 50 freestyle of 23.62 replaces that of Sarah Roeser. Hedley also broke Roeser's 100 freestyle pool record with a time of 50.99, making Hedley the first woman to break the threshold of 51 seconds in Allendale. The 200 freestyle record, which was previously owned by Leonie Van Noort, is now 1:51.18 after Hedley's performance Saturday.

Junior Matt Bosch won two events plus anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a new GVSU Fieldhouse Pool record, leading the Lakers to a near upset of the nation's top ranked team and defending national champion.

While the Lakers didn't quite pull off the upset, Boyce said the fight to the finish was thrilling.

"Those are some nice relays to close out," Boyce said. "Being on the pool deck for three hours or so, you get a little tired towards the end. Our team put it together, had some good swims and broke a pool record with the men's relay so it was nice to see that."

After dropping the first two events, the Lakers secured the top three spots in the 200 freestyle. Bosch led the way, touching in 1:39.90. Roger Miret Sala, a graduate student who is the reigning GLIAC Swimmer of the Week, placed second with a time of 1:42.46. Miret Sala just out touched junior Austin Millard, who finished with a time of 1:42.72. The 1-2-3 finish provided Grand Valley State with a one-point lead through the first three men's events.

Bosch also took first place in the 100 freestyle, winning in a time of 45.27. His split as the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay was 44.59, helping GVSU shatter the previous pool record by almost two seconds. The 4:04.80 by Wayne State will be taken off the board now that GVSU has finished with a time of 3:02.89. Thus, GVSU now owns all three freestyle relay pool records. Other members of the record-breaking relay include: Evan Scotto Divetta, Roger Miret Sala, and Austin Millard.

Freshman Andrew Goh also continued his winning ways by sweeping the breaststroke events. Goh won the 100 breaststroke finishing in 57.11. He added another victory to his name with a time of 2:05.86 in the 200 breaststroke. Boyce said competing on the world stage over the Summer has helped Goh mold into a winner in his first month of collegiate competition.

"He swam hard over the Summer and competed in the World Championships for Malaysia," Boyce said. "He's a freshman, so it's a whole new experience for him. He's learning to race a little bit more. We're racing most weekends. That's probably a little bit more than he's used to. I think every meet is a different dynamic, but this is a good one for him to get a couple of wins in the 100 and 200 breast."

Junior Jon Kantzenbach also notched a victory in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:54.27.

The Lakers will remain home as Northern Michigan arrives Oct. 28 to enter the GVSU Fieldhouse Pool. Northern Michigan is ranked No.7 on the women's side and No.14 on the men's side. The GVSU women will be looking for their second upset in as many weeks, hoping to cap off October with an undefeated record. The men have already taken down one ranked GLIAC foe this season and will look to do the same against Northern Michigan. The races will start at 1 p.m. Boyce provided just a tad bit of a preview for next week.

"I think it just keeps their confidence up," Boyce said when asked about strong early season results. "It's important to have confidence when you race. We have a good one next week against one of our bigger foes in the conference in Northern Michigan. I think it's going to help along the way."
