GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Valley State opened the season with convincing victories over Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.
On the men's side, the No.6 Lakers picked up an impressive 230.00-69.00 victory over No.15 Saginaw Valley State. Additionally, the Lakers defeated host Calvin University 231.00-68.00.
On the women's side, the No.12 Lakers dispatched GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley State 250.00-49.00 while taking care of business 226.00-74.00 in victorious fashion over host Calvin University.
Sophomore
Lucy Hedley broke the GVSU record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.37, shattering the previous record of 50.92 by more than half a second. In addition to winning the 100 free, Hedley also took first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.46.
Freshman
Natalia Hermanowska also put on a display of victory. The Warsaw, Poland native swept the breaststroke events with times of 1:05.12 in the 100 and 2:24.38 in the 200.

Vittoria Proietti also contributed as the team finished in 1:45.06.
In the diving well, senior
Jess McEachern and junior
Maddie Kooistra stole the show. The teams split victories while also splitting second place finishes. McEachern won the 1-meter dive with a score of 258.30. Kooistra took the 3-meter dive with a score of 272.90.
The ladies won all but four events.
The men saw similar results to the women. All but two events went the way of the Lakers.
Freshman
Andrew Goh won three events, including the 200 individual medley by a time of 1:53.78. Goh also swept the breaststroke events with a time of 55.83 in the 100 and a time of 2:04.41 in the 200.
Senior
Eric Hieber swept the distance races, winning the 1,000 freestyle in 9:26.65. He finished the 500 freestyle in 4:34.59.
The backstroke events were owned by junior
Thomas Zoldowski. A time of 49.68 secured Zoldowski the 100 backstroke. He tapped the wall in 1:48.22 to claim the 200 backstroke.
Evan Scotto Divetta,
Roger Miret Sala and
Matt Bosch also won multiple events on the night. Individually, graduate student Miret Sala took the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.42. Bosch, who is a junior, was victorious in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.69. Scotto Divetta, a sophomore, claimed first in the 50 free with a time of 20.50. All three were joined by junior
Brennan Neitzel to claim first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.51.
Grand Valley State now heads home for the next two weeks. The Lakers will host ranked teams each of the next two weeks. Indianapolis is the defending NCAA Division II Champion and are currently nation's top ranked team on the men's side. On the women's side, Indianapolis is No.3 in the CSCAA rankings. The meet will commence 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at the GVSU Fieldhouse.
