Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team completed the four-game series sweep with a 13-8 win over Saginaw Valley State Sunday. The Lakers improve to 27-13 on the season, 10-6 in conference play.
The Lakers were led by a balanced offensive attack that produced 13 runs off 19 hits. Eight total Laker batters recorded multiple hits on the day.
Nathan Logan went 3-5 at the plate with a home run, double, three RBI's and two runs scored.
Kyle Nott launched his second home run of the year and hit 2-5 with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored.
Christian Faust and
Cade Stanton each went 2-5 on the day. Faust added two runs scored and an RBI, while Stanton scored once.
Carter Smith,
Brendan Guciardo,
Jake Rydquist and
Spencer Nelson each had two hits in the win.
The bats got rolling early as GVSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the opening half inning. Faust got the scoring started with an RBI double that scored Nott. Next batter, Logan crushed his ninth home run of the season.
Justin Mansager added a fourth run with a double that scored Stanton.
Saginaw Valley responded in the second with three runs to cut the Laker lead to one. In the fourth, GVSU added two runs on a Saginaw Valley error to bring the lead back to three. In the bottom half of the frame, SVSU cut the Laker lead back to one on a 2-run home run to left center field.
In the fifth, GVSU exploded for seven runs to take an eight-run lead. Guciardo got the scoring started in the inning with a single to right field that scored Logan. After Rydquist singled,
Connor Schuman singled to score Guciardo followed by a Nelson singled to score Rydquist. Next batter, Nott homered to center field to break out the game, giving the Lakers a 12-5 lead. Logan would drive in Faust later in the inning to make it a 13-5 advantage.
Saginaw Valley would score two runs in the sixth and a run in the eighth to make it a 13-8 game, but the Lakers would hang on to complete the series sweep.
Ben Thomas earned the win (5-1) for his second of the weekend after tossing 2.2 innings of relief allowing one run off two hits, while striking out five Cardinal batters.
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the mound and got a no decision after tossing 4.0 innings allowing five runs off seven hits.
Logan Wynalda and
Nathan Wargolet each made an appearance in relief.
The Lakers will host Davenport for a four-game series starting Friday (April 29) at 3:05 PM at the GVSU Baseball Field.
