Baseball sweeps doubleheader vs McKendree

Nate Logan powers GVSU to game two win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEBANON, Ill. – The Grand Valley State baseball team swept today's doubleheader against McKendree on the road at Hypes field in Lebanon, Illinois. The Lakers improve to 12-5 on the season and will conclude this weekend's four game series with a doubleheader tomorrow (March 20) with first pitch for game one slated at 1:00 PM ET. 
 
Game One – W, 11-5
 
Sophomore Nathan Logan opened up the scoring early for the Lakers with an RBI single to right field to score Kyle Nott. GVSU would score four runs in the second inning . Nott ripped an RBI double to center field to make it 3-0. The next batter, Christian Faust smoked his third home run of the season over the center field wall to make it 5-0. 
 
McKendree answered in the bottom half of the second with a 2-run home run of their own to make it 5-2. The Lakers took back their 5-run lead in the fourth inning off home runs from Connor Schuman and Spencer Nelson that made it 7-2. Nathan Logan added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 8-2. McKendree launched two more home runs in the fifth inning to cut the Laker lead to three. In the sixth inning, Nathan Logan tripled to center field, scoring Nott and Faust to make it a 10-5 game. Justin Ratliff added another run in the sixth with an RBI infield single.
 
Austin Brown got the start on the mound for the Lakers and earned his second win of the season (2-0). Brown tossed 5.0 innings allowing five runs off six hits, while striking out eight Bearcat batters. Ben Thomas and Nathan Wargolet each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
 
The Laker offense was led by Kyle Nott who went 4-5 with an RBI double and four runs scored. Nathan Logan batted 3-4 with four RBI's and a run scored. Spencer Nelson, Christian Faust, and Connor Schuman each homered.
 
Game Two – W, 8-7
 
McKendree took an early lead off a solo home run in the first inning. The Bearcats would score two more runs to take a 3-0 lead after the opening inning. GVSU quickly tied the game in the second inning. Jonas Gulbrandsen got the Lakers on the board with an RBI sacrifice fly. Connor Schuman singled to right field to make it a one run game and Spencer Nelson tied it off a fielder's choice. 
 
The Lakers took their first lead of the game with a 3-run fifth inning. Christian Faust put GVSU on top with an RBI fielder's choice. Logan doubled to center field to score Faust to make it 5-3. Next batter, Justin Mansager singled to center field to make it 6-3. McKendre would continue to use the long ball, hitting a solo homer in the sixth to make it 6-4. The Bearcats would make it a one run game off a double to center field. McKendree would tie the game in the seventh off another solo home run. 
 
In the top of the ninth inning with one out, Nathan Logan crushed a 2-run home run for his third of the season to give GVSU an 8-6 advantage. McKendree would score a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Nick Shaw secured the win by striking out the Bearcat batter with the tying run on second.
 
Nick Rutkowski started on the mound and pitched a no decision. Rutkowski threw 5.0 innings allowing five runs off eight hits, striking out five. Colin Bradley earned the win (2-1) in 3.o innings of relief allowing one run off 2 hits, while striking out three. Nick Shaw earned his third save of the year and struck out two batters in the ninth.
 
Nathan Logan fueled the Laker offense going 2-5 with the game-winning 2-run home run in the ninth. Logan notched three RBI's and scored two runs. Justin Mansager went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Connor Schuman hit 2-4 with an RBI. Christian Faust added two hits with an RBI and two runs scored.
