PREVIEW: Baseball travels to play four-game series at McKendree

The Lakers went 7-4 on their spring break trip in Florida

LEBANON, Ill. – The Grand Valley State baseball team will travel to Lebanon, Ill. to play a four-game series against McKendree beginning Saturday at 1:00 PM.

The Lakers have begun the season with a 10-5 record. They return from their spring break trip in Florida, going 7-4 in the sunshine state. GVSU defeated GLIAC foe Wayne State in the final game down south 7-4. The Lakers came back from a four-run deficit, scoring four runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth. Senior Ben Thomas earned the win (2-0) and senior Nick Shaw recorded the save (2). Senior Christian Faust went 3-5 with a double and two RBI's, while sophomore Kyle Nott batted 2-4 with a double, three RBI's and scored the game-winning run.
 
Sophomore Nathan Logan was named GLIAC player of the week after batting .448 with seven doubles, one triple, five RBI's and five runs scored over the span of eight games in Florida. Logan leads the Lakers with a .365 batting average and eight doubles. Christian Faust is hitting .364 on the season and leads the team with 17 RBI's, 20 hits and 16 runs scored. Junior Spencer Nelson and Kyle Nott each have scored 15 runs for the Lakers. 
 
The Laker pitching staff have boasted a 3.03 team ERA and pitched three shutouts last week in Florida. Sophomore Nick Rutkowski leads the starting staff with a 1.50 ERA in three starting appearances. Rutkowski tossed nine innings allowing just one off five hits in a 1-0 loss over Embry-Riddle. Junior Rylan Peets pitched a complete game shutout allowing seven hits and striking out five batters in a 2-0 win over Northern State on March 14. Sophomore Austin Brown tossed a complete game shutout allowing just two hits, while striking out eight batters in a 2-0 win over Wayne State College on March 13.
 
McKendree enter the series with a 4-10 record. The Bearcats are coming off a three-game series against Illinois-Springfield where they went 0-3 on the weekend. McKendree is hitting .273 as a team and are led by senior Corey Price, who is hitting .439 with three home runs and 12 runs batted in to start the season.
