Men's basketball runs away from Northwood on senior day

Lakers beat Timberwolves, 82-58, Saturday

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team celebrated senior day in style with an 82-58 runaway win over the Northwood Timberwolves Saturday (Feb. 19) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers win their second straight game to improve to 16-9 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
 
Four Lakers finished in double figures, led by Christian Negron's 17 points and eight rebounds with a block and two steals. Jake Van Tubbergen scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds with three steals. Jordan Harris had 10 points with six assists and Isaac Gassman scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.
 
The Laker bench accounted for 30 points, led by 10 from Marius Grazulis. Ja'Kavien Lewis had six points and seven assists, including an alley-oop delivery off the backboard for a ferocious jam by Negron in the second half. Ethan Alderink had six points and four boards and Blake Verbeek had five with a pair of boards.
 
The Lakers took an early lead, but things were tight in the first half. The teams traded leads on the see-saw for four straight possessions before the Lakers closed out the half with a 10-2 run over the final four minutes to take a seven-point lead, 37-30, into halftime. The lead would expand quickly in the second half as the seniors got to start the party early with the runaway win.
 
The Lakers are on the road for the final week of the regular season, beginning Thursday (Feb. 24) in Detroit for a date with the Wayne State Warriors. The game is slated for a 7:30 PM tip and the action can be heard live on The Ticket West Michigan (106.1 FM, 1340 AM).
