No. 14 GVSU Women’s Lacrosse Opens Up 2022 Season in Florida

Lakers will play Saint Leo University and University of Tampa

The 2022 season for the GVSU women's lacrosse team opens up on Thursday, Feb. 17 as the Lakers fly south for the week to face Saint Leo University at 7:00 p.m. Grand Valley State will play their second game of the season at the University of Tampa on Sunday, Feb. 20, with game time set for 11:00 a.m. This will be the first matchup between the Lakers and the two Florida squads. 

This year the Lakers have been listed as the No. 14 team in the 2022 ILWomen/IWLCA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll on Jan. 31. GVSU finished the 2021 season as the No. 17 team in the final IWLCA poll. 

The Lakers completed their 2021 season with a 12-2 overall record and an undefeated season in the GLIAC with a conference finish of 8-0. GVSU capped off their season winning the GLIAC regular season title, as well as the GLIAC tournament title after defeating the Davenport Panthers 21-12 in the championship game. 

Grand Valley State returns IWLCA All-American, junior Molly Bursinger. Bursinger finished the 2021 season with 40 goals, 52 points, 72 draw controls, and a 71.4 shot percentage for the Lakers. GVSU also returns their leading scorer from last season, sophomore Maddy Champagne, who led the Lakers with 45 goals and 28 ground balls. 

Playing in their fifth season with the Lakers, GVSU also returns Olivia Espostio and Sophia Conroy. Both Conroy and Esposito were selected to the IWLCA All-Region Second Team and received All-GLIAC honors. Conroy finished the season with team-high 61 points and was second behind Champagne in season goals with 43. Esposito finished the season with 31 goals and 35 points for the Lakers.
