ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team travels to the Upper Peninsula to begin the second half of GLIAC play. The Lakers will travel to Houghton to take on Michigan Tech Friday (Oct. 7) at 7:00 PM before traveling to Marquette to face Northern Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 9) at 1:00 PM.
The Lakers enter the weekend with a six-game winning streak and are in first place in the GLIAC standings with a 6-0-1 record, 8-1-2 overall. Last weekend, the Lakers defeated Davenport 5-1 in the crosstown showdown. Five different Lakers scored in the team win.
Kennedy Metzger was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after notching a goal and assist in the win.
Kennedy Bearden leads the Laker offense with 18 points and six assists which ranks tied for first in the GLIAC.
Taylor Reid and Bearden lead GVSU with six goals which is second in the conference. Metzger has added three goals and two assists for eight points on the season, while senior defender
Cate Brown leads all Laker field players with 780 minutes played. Robertson has started all 11 games between the pipes and leads the GLIAC with a .825 save percentage. The sophomore has three shutouts and two combined shutouts on the year and ranks second in the GLIAC with a 0.68 goals against average.
The last time the Lakers and the Huskies met was less than two weeks ago in Allendale, where GVSU won 1-0. The Lakers are now 19-0-2 all-time against Michigan Tech.
Taylor Reid scored the lone goal in the second half off an assist from Metzger. The Lakers held the huskies to just six shot attempts, outshooting Michigan Tech 17-6, 9-2 on goal.
Kendall Robertson made two saves for her third shutout of the year.
Michigan Tech enters the weekend in seventh place in the GLIAC standings with a 1-3-3 record, 3-5-3 overall. Freshman Alyvia Sanom leads the Huskies with two goals, while senior Stephanie Yeager has notched a goal and two assists on the year. Goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde has started all 11 games making 37 saves with an .804 save percentage. VanLangevelde was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week last weekend after making six saves in a scoreless draw against Northern Michigan.
On Sunday, the Lakers will travel to Marquette to face Northern Michigan. The Wildcats will host Davenport on Friday before hosting the Lakers Sunday afternoon. Northern Michigan enters the weekend in second place in the GLIAC standings with a 4-1-2 record, 7-1-3 overall. The Lakers is 35-2-1 all-time against the Wildcats. The last time the Lakers and Wildcats met was two weeks ago where the Lakers scored a late goal to defeat the Wildcats 2-1 in a thrilling victory.
Kennedy Bearden notched the game-winning goal in the 89' minute off a rebound that hit the crossbar. Bearden also added an assist in the first half off a great lead pass for
Taylor Reid. The Wildcats received a red card in the 25' minute and had to play down a person the rest of the game. The Lakers held Northern Michigan to just six shots, outshooting the Wildcats 18-6, 6-2 on goal and did not allow a single corner kick.
The Wildcats are led by sophomore Brooke Pietila who has notched six goals and six assists for 18 points this season. Sophomore Justina L'Esperance leads the GLIAC with seven goals on the season and has added two assists for 16 points. Freshman Molly Pistorius has added five goals and five assists for 15 points for the Wildcat offense. Senior goalkeeper Shenae Kreps has started 10 games in net making 18 saves with a .692 save percentage.
