GVSU Sweeps GLIAC Twinbill At Purdue Northwest

Lakers improve to 3-0 in GIAC action

Box Score Grand Valley State picked up a Saturday (Mar. 27) doubleheader sweep at Purdue Northwest, winning game one 3-1 and game two 12-3. The Lakers are 6-6 overall and 3-0 in GLIAC action, while PNW falls to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in league action. First pitch for the final game of the four-game series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday (Mar. 28).  

Game 1 - GV 3, PNW 1
Purdue Northwest scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a single, sac bunt, groundout and single to left. The Lakers answered with a run in the top of the fourth when 1B Ryan Blake-Jones singled to center and moved to second on a sac bunt from C Joe Laudont. LF Anthony Cocco doubled home Blake-Jones for the equalizer. GVSU struck for two more runs in the top of the fifth on three hits. SS Parker Murdie singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt from CF Carter Smith. 3B Christian Faust singled to put runners at first and third. Blake-Jones then delivered a 2-out double to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. 

Mark Scannell went a solid six innings, yielding one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Scannell got eight groundouts and seven flyouts in his six innings of work. Michael Barno eanred the save with one strikeout in a hitless ninth. Blake-Jones was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Cocco was 2-3 with and RBI and a double. Faust, Murdie and DH Ryan Lorber each collected a hit.  

Game 2 - GV 12, PNW 3

Grand Valley State used a 5-run second inning and a 7-run eighth inning to claim this GLIAC road contest 12-3. Austin Brown picked up the win on the mound, yielding two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Three Laker pitchers struck out 10 and walked just one. 

PNW took a 1-0 lead with a solo HR in the bottom of the first, but the Lakers put up five in the top of the second on four hits. LF Anthony Cocco drove in a pair with a triple and DH Ryan Lorber plated Cocco with a single. 3B Christian Faust drove in two with a 2-out single to right. The Pride scored a single run in the fourth, but the Lakers put the game out of reach with seven in the eighth on seven hits. RF Nate Logan singled and SS Parker Murdie doubled to score Logan. CF Carter Smith singled and Faust tripled to center to plate two and scored on a throwing error. Freshman 2B Connor Schuman singled for his first collegiate hit and scored on a HR to left center off the bat of 1B Ryan Blake-Jones. Freshman catcher Zachary Collins then recorded his first collegiate HR, a shot to center, for the Lakers' final run.
