GVSU Men Claim 2021 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championship

Lakers have won seven consecutive GLIAC titles

Grand Valley State captured the 2021 GLIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship in record-setting fashion at the Holland Aquatic Center. The Lakers, who have now won seven consecutive GLIAC titles and nine overall, scored 1,072.5 points, 344 more than Wayne State (728.5). NMU was third with 567.5 points. GVSU scored a GLIAC all-time record 1,072.5 points, bettering the 1,025 they scored a year ago. The 344-point margin of victory is the most since 1994 when Oakland outpointed Ferris State by 394.5 points.  The Lakers won eight individual events and one relay. In addition, GVSU swept the conference honors in 2021.

1650 Freestyle – Freshman Eric Hieber continued to dominate at the 2021 GLIAC Championships in the freestyle events when he captured his third individual title, this one coming in the 1650 free (15:16.51). Hieber set the all-time GLIAC record, GLIAC Championship meet, GVSU varsity, GVSU freshman and has the second-fastest time in D2 this season. Jesse Goodyear touched second (15:31.79), Mortiz Bartels fifth (16:11.73), Austin Cabel sixth (16:14.56), Cade Vruggink seventh (16:17.57) and Daniel Mullen ninth (16:26.36). GVSU placed six among the top nine.
 
100 Freestyle – Oscar Saura-Armengol touched fourth in 44.78 and Owen Ganzer 15th (46.93). 
 
200 Backstroke – Roger Miret Sala finished second when hit the wall in 1:45.78, followec by Dwiki Anugrah in fifth (1:49.47), Noah Ellis in sixth (1:50.05), Markus Kruse in ninth (1:51.13) and Jonathan Blowedow in 13th(1:55.38). 
 
400 Free Relay – The relay team of Eric Hieber, Noah Ellis, Cade Vruggink and Oscar Saura-Armengol hit the wall second in a time of 3:02.08. 
 
200 Breaststroke – Keegan Hawkins hit the wall second in a time of 1:59.08 to lead five Lakers among the top 14. Evan Dies finished sixth (2:04.79), Matthew Lane seventh (2:06.05), Austin Cabel 11th (2:08.08) and Jamahl Hogan 14th (2:11.23).
