No. 3 Lakers top Winona State Friday to earn Opening Day split

Hannah Beatus strikes out 11 in triumphant return

Box Score ROSEMONT, Ill. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers bounced back to earn a split on Opening Day with a 5-1 win over the Winona State Warriors Friday (Feb. 21) afternoon. The Lakers are 1-1 after the first day of their two-day tournament, with two more scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
 
Lydia Goble and Nikoma Holmen drove in a pair of runs each to lead the Laker attack. Goble smacked her first home run of the season in the top of the first inning to put GVSU in front. A Goble single was followed by a Holmen sacrifice fly in the third inning to plate two more runs. Taylor Rieger doubled home a run in the seventh for her first RBI of the season and Holmen followed up with a run-scoring single of her own to round out the scoring.
 
Hannah Beatus (W, 1-0) was triumphant in her return to the circle, going the distance and allowing one unearned run. She struck out 11 while allowing two hits and four walks. The 11 strikeouts were a career-high for the redshirt sophomore.
