ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State women's soccer and head coach
Jeff Hosler announce 10 signees during National Signing Day to join the defending National Champion Lakers in the fall of 2021. The class, featuring eight Michigan natives and a pair of Ohio products, includes a well-rounded group with two goalkeepers, two defenders, four midfielders and a pair of forwards.
"This is a class with tremendous depth positionally and in playing styles," Hosler said. "Some of these young women were heavily recruited nationally and some flew under the radar a bit, but all have the mindset and talent to contribute to our team very quickly. We're excited to see the impact they can make and how they continue our commitment to excellence in a championship culture."
The goalkeepers include
Allison Fredrick and
Kendall Robertson.
Fredrick will earn four varsity letters for Dakota high school as starting keeper, earning a pair of all-district honors, and was all-region and honorable mention all-state as a sophomore. She was named team MVP in 2019 as she led her team to the district finals. Her four years with Vardar ECNL saw a Nationals playoff appearance in 2018 and a place on the prestigious "ECNL Players to Watch" list. Fredrick has trained through Elite Keeper Academy for seven seasons and has worked with both male and female professional keepers throughout her youth career.
Robertson set the Western High School (Jackson, Mich.) record for single-season shutouts with 15 in 2019. She recorded 118 saves that season with a 0.42 goals-against average en route to second team all-state accolades along with conference, county, regional and area honors for the second straight year. She has been a captain for her club team (2014-2020) which just won their first Michigan State Cup title and represented Rush National Select's U17 team at the Youth World Cup, advancing to the semifinals in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The defenders in the class are
Karen Barry and
Cierra Trudeau.
Barry has been utilized in a number of positions before becoming a stout defender for one of the top teams and clubs across the country, Michigan Hawks ECNL. She attends Henry Ford II High School, which produced three-time All-American center back
Cecilia Steinwascher. Trudeau earned the Flint Area Top Girls Soccer MVP vote in 2019. She helped Grand Blanc High School to a state finals appearance and KLAA title as a freshman in 2018. Her sophomore season saw a district championship in a 21-2-1 campaign. She played club for Vardar ECNL.
The Lakers add midfielders
Hannah Becker,
Nina Ferraro,
Ryann Fetty and
Stephanie Sturgeon.
Becker is no stranger to a challenge. She served as the place kicker for her high school football team, setting the school record for PAT percentage, and became the youngest player ever on the semi-professional Detroit City Football Club (DCFC). She also has a decorated club soccer career for Michigan Jaguars from 2010-18 and Michigan Jaguars Academy since. Her academy team qualified for the 2020 playoffs, which did not take place due to COVID-19. She was a two-time state champion (fall and spring of 2017) and had multiple regional qualifying seasons. She spent four years in the ODP, including regional pool in 2018 before having to drop out due to U.S. Development Academy play.
Ferraro has proven herself as a leader. She was a four-year starter at Eisenhower High School, finishing second on the team in goals her sophomore season with 12. She followed up by earning a team captain role in her junior and senior seasons. She's also team captain for her club, Vardar ECNL, who she's played with since 2018 after joining from Nationals. She helped lead Vardar to ECNL Playoffs runner ups in Showcase Division in 2019. She took her training and nutrition regimen to a new level during the national pandemic, continuing to lead by example before stepping foot on the GVSU campus.
Fetty's athleticism and competitive nature stand out as a four-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball and running track in addition to her ultra-competitive club soccer schedule. After developing with the Nationals, her club career has culminated with Michigan Hawks ECNL and sees her travel all over the country for competition, stretching from coast to coast. Her dynamic playmaking ability out of the midfield helped her side qualify for the most recent ECNL national playoffs. She plans to play high school soccer for the first time at Clarkston in her senior season, having been previously unable to participate due to the club soccer demands.
Ohio native Sturgeon has been a true playmaker for Midview High School, racking up 48 goals and 47 assists in her career. A four-year varsity letter winner and two-time captain, she earned all-Ohio honors in 2020, first team All-Greater Cleveland 2018, 2019,2020 and second team in 2017. She's a four-time All-Southwest Conference honoree, including first team honors in 2018 and 2020, four-time first team All-Lorain County and has been her team offensive MVP in all four seasons. Stephanie has come up with Cleveland FC and is a key contributor for one of the top teams in the nation for the age group.
The forwards in the class are
Claire Breault and
Chandler Clark.
Breault is a three-time all-conference performer thus far and two-time captain for Waterford Mott High School, scoring 38 goals and dishing 19 assists for her career. Claire was also a member of the Michigan ODP state team from 2014-17 before joining the Nationals Development Academy team in 2019 and then later helping Nationals to a state cup championship this fall.
Clark is an all-around athlete and will have 12 varsity letters when her high school career is said and done as a four-year starter at forward for soccer, point guard for basketball and shortstop in softball. She set the Bath High School career goals record with 117, including 45 in her junior season to rank third in the entire state of Ohio. That same year she was recognized with high school All-America honors by United Soccer Coaches. She's twice won both conference and district player of the year and was named first team All-Ohio. Chandler was also an honorable mention all-state basketball honoree and earned conference all-star selections on the diamond.
An exciting and talented class that bolsters all four lines, the Lakers will be reloaded for 2021. This group will join the Lakers for the next fall season, when GVSU begins the title defense from the 2019 campaign after fall 2020 championships were canceled.
