Van Tubbergen named preseason All-American

Basketball Times names the senior to Division II team

10.23.2020

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Rising senior Jake Van Tubbergen has been named a preseason All-American by Basketball Times. He is one of 24 players listed to the preseason Division II list and one of just two from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), joining Myles Belyeu of Saginaw Valley. Van Tubbergen earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America and honorable mention D2CCA All-America honors last season.

The Holland, Michigan native averaged a double-double last season, crossing the 1,000-point mark for his career. Van Tubbergen averaged 18.4 points and a GLIAC-best 10 rebounds per contest. He dropped a career-high 39 points to lead the Lakers to a double-overtime win at Northern Michigan; the most points by a Laker in a single game since 1997. He shot .542 from the field and .775 from the free throw line en route to becoming the first Laker to earn NABC All-America honors since 2008.

"Jake has grown into a really great player and was huge for us last season," said head coach Ric Wesley. "His accolades are well deserved, but he hasn't rested on his laurels. He is as focused and determined as ever and we're excited to see what his senior season brings."

Van Tubbergen led the Lakers to the most wins in a season since that 2007-08 season, going 23-7 to earn a GLIAC South Division championship; the seventh conference divisional title in program history. The Lakers, who were shockingly left out of the Midwest Region in the NCAA Tournament, are loaded behind their preseason All-American as they gear up for the revenge tour when the 2021 season begins.

All GVSU basketball games are broadcast live on ESPN 96.1 FM and all home games are streamed on the Grand Valley Sports Network. For updates, including schedule and attendance information, follow the Lakers on social media @GVSULakers and @GVSUBasketball and check GVSULakers.com regularly.
