FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team came from behind to defeat Southern New Hampshire 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-11) in a five set thriller at the NSU Shark Invite on day one. The Lakers up their winning streak to three and now hold a 3-2 record on the season.
GVSU tallied 68 kills and a .203 attack percentage compared to SNHU's 51 kills and .151 hit percentage, while totaling more assists (62-47), digs (81-70), and blocks (12-10) as well.
Offensively redshirt freshman
Emma Clines and sophomore
Ali Thompson each had 17 kills to lead the attack. Clines recorded a .303 attack percentage with freshman
Mattie McCabe chipping in with 10 kills and a .429 attack percentage. Sophomore
Fernanda Spengler added 12 kills. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay had a career-high 56 assists to help lead the comeback.

Mattie McCabe each totaled five blocks to pace the defense, while Thompson and senior
Kendall Yerkes each had 20 digs.
The Lakers trailed much of the first two sets and were down 4-0 to start the third set before going on a 9-2 run and eventually took a 13-9 lead in the set. GVSU maintained no less than a three-point lead to finish the set.
In the fourth set, GVSU found themselves trailing 5-0 and 8-2 to begin the set, but the Lakers chipped away and took the lead at 18-17. After the two teams traded points, Clines stepped up with four kills in the final six points to force a fifth set.
SNHU led 5-3 to begin set five before the Lakers scored six out of the next seven points to take a 9-6 lead. That lead would hold as McCabe finished off the match with her 10
th kill of the afternoon.
GVSU will take on Wayne State (Neb.) at approximately 4:30 this afternoon.
