The Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams completed day one of the 2019 GLIACÂ Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday (Feb. 23) hosted by Saginaw Valley State and saw strong performance from both teams as they had a combined 12
podium finishes which included five first place finishes and had 15 advancements into the next the final rounds. The women are currently first with 102 points, while the men are second with 40 points.

The 2019 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will resume Sunday (Feb.24) with the heptathlon starting at 9 a.m.

The Lakers had three individual and two relay teams claim GLIAC titles on the first day of the championships. On the women side,
Elli Kimes defend her title in the pole vault after she cleared 3.96m, while
Angelica Floyd also defended her title in the long jump with a distance of 5.78m.
Jessica Gockley captured her first GLIAC title in the 5,000m run after she finished with a time of 16:43.63.

The Lakers' also had both the men's and women's distance medley relay team win titles too. The women's team made up of
Gina Patterson,
Rachael Walters,
Sarah Rustmann and
Allie Ludge crossed the finish line in 11:32.65, while the men's team composed of
John Groendyk,
Andrew McFarland,
Nick Salomon and
Dennis Mbuta finished with a time of 9:57.45

GVSU saw strong performances all around on the first day of the 2019 GLIAC Indoor Championships as they had nine podium finishes, eight athletes advance to the finals, four GLIAC champions, two event groups sweep the podium and one new meet record.

The Lakers had eight individuals and one relay team reach the podium as they swept the pole vault and 5,000m run for the second straight year.
Elli Kimes defended her title in the pole vault after she cleared 3.96m, while
Sara Overbeek placed second with a height of 3.86m and
Carly Livingston finished third with a height of 3.86. The women's 5,000m athletes went one-two-three as
Jessica Gockley was crowned the GLIAC champion after she crossed the finish line at 16:43.63, while her teammates
Malea Teerman and
Hanna Groeber placed second and third with times of 16:43.63 and 17:23.98. The DMR team composed of
Gina Patterson,
Rachael Walters,
Sarah Rustmann and
Allie Ludge crossed the finish line in 11:32.65 for first place. In the field events,
Angelica Floyd defended her title as she finished first in the long jump with a distance of 5.78m. GVSU also had additional podium finishes from
Bobbie Goodwin, who finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 19.13m.

Grand Valley State also saw several athletes advance into tomorrow's finals as Floyd set a new meet record in the 60m dash at 7.47 seconds. Floyd would also advance in the 200m dash with a time of 25.17 second, while
Willow Stuedemann (25.45 seconds) and
Bailey McGill (25.46 seconds) also advanced to the 200m dash finals.
Tiara Wiggins and
Joselyn Mwenifumbo also advanced to the finals in the 60m hurdles with times of 8.76 seconds and 8.81 seconds.
Heather Johnson (57.33 seconds),
Jessica Eby (57.85 seconds) and
Sarah Beulla (58.72 seconds) also advanced to the 400m dash finals.

The Lakers saw strong performances all around as they concluded the first day of the GLIAC Championships with one first place finish from the DMR and two podium finishes and six qualifying times for tomorrow's finals.

The DMR team made up of
John Groendyk,
Andrew McFarland,
Nick Salomon and
Dennis Mbuta were crowned conference champions after they finished first with a time of 9:57.45. In the men's 5,000m run,
Connor Schwartz placed second with a time of 14:42.92, while
Ben Zaremba was third, after he crossed the finish line in 14:43.10.

GVSU also had several athletes advance to tomorrow's finals.
Jordan Johnson qualified in the 60m dash and the 200m with times of 6.92 seconds and 21.67 seconds, while
Emmanuel Arop (6.979 seconds) and
Kenny Jones (6.980 seconds) also advanced to the 60m finals. In the 400m dash,
Thomas Capers and
Daniel Walker also made it to the finals with times of 48.75 seconds and 48.86 seconds.
Tyler Kirkwood also made to the 60m hurdles finals, after he finished with a time of 8.55 seconds.
