GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-11, 27-25) victory over Davenport on Saturday. With the win, the Lakers increase their winning streak to four matches and move to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in GLIAC play.
GVSU put together an impressive .311 attack percentage, the highest of the season, including a .432 percentage in the third set. The Lakers led Davenport statistically in kills (60-49), blocks (11-4), assists (55-47), and points (74-58). Individually, three Lakers recorded 14 or more kills. Redshirt freshman
Emma Clines had 17 kills with a .412 attack percentage, freshman
Jaeli Primus tallied 16 kills with a .640 percentage and seven blocks, and sophomore
Ali Thompson posted a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay recorded 49 assists and senior
Kendall Yerkes had 14 digs.
In the first set, the Lakers built a 10-7 lead, but a Davenport 4-0 run gave them their first lead of the set. GVSU regained the lead and held the lead until 22-21 before the Panthers scored four out of the final five points to win the set.
GVSU bounced back in set two as they built an early lead and maintained the lead throughout the set. The Lakers were up 14-8 as they capitalized on three straight Davenport attack errors to seize their biggest lead of the set. Clines ended the set on a kill.
The third set was dominated by the Lakers, scoring the first six points of the set, and jumping out to a 15-3 lead. GVSU continued to grow the lead and led by as many as 14 points at 23-9. After a kill by Thompson, the Lakers won the set on a service error by the Panthers.
The Lakers led once again early in the fourth set, building a 12-7 lead. Davenport answered with a run of their own and tied the set at 15-15 which setup a back and forth affair the rest of the set. After trading points until 25-25, freshman
Karlie Kucharczyk recorded a kill to go up 26-25, and the following point was won by GVSU on an attack error by Davenport.
GVSU will be back in Allendale for the first time since October 12 next weekend as they take on Wisconsin Parkside (Nov. 8) and Purdue Northwest (Nov. 9, Senior Day).
