DETROIT, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Wayne State (25-21, 29-27, 15-25, 15-25, 9-15) on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. The Lakers end the regular season 13-14 overall and 8-8 in GLIAC play.
Wayne State led in kills (65-53), assists (57-50), digs (86-66), and points (79-71), while GVSU held the advantage in aces (8-6) and blocks (10-8). Sophomore
Ali Thompson had a team-high 15 kills, while freshman
Jaeli Primus added 14 kills and three blocks. Redshirt freshman
Emma Clines totaled nine kills and six blocks and sophomore
Kaily Grulke chipped in with five blocks. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay tallied 45 assists and senior
Kendall Yerkes had 19 digs.
GVSU jumped out to an early lead in the first set, 13-6 and maintain the lead at 19-12. Wayne State would chip away and cut the lead to just three at 23-20, but the Lakers scored two out of the last three points to win the set.
The Warriors would take an early 5-2 lead in set two before GVSU went on a 6-1 run to overtake the lead. The two teams would exchange the lead multiple times throughout the set and Wayne State would take control late at 24-22, however the Lakers tied the set at 24-24. After being tied 27-27, back-to-back kills by Primus ended the set.
Wayne State would bounce back from being down 0-2 to take the next two sets by scores of 25-15 in each set and tie the match at 2-2.
The Warriors would carry that momentum into set five by jumping out to a 4-0 lead. GVSU would get as close as 11-9, but Wayne State scored the final four points to seal the match.
