HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (16-25, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25) to Michigan Tech in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Wednesday night. The Lakers finish the 2019 campaign with a record of 13-15.
Michigan Tech took the first two sets handily before the Lakers bounced back to win set three. The Lakers took that momentum into set four, however the Huskies overtook the lead midway through the set and ended the match in the fourth set.
As a team, Michigan Tech led in most statistical categories including; kills (56-48), aces (10-3), assists (56-42), and digs (71-58). GVSU did dominant in the blocking category as they held the advantage 10-3. Individually, freshman
Jaeli Primus totaled 15 kills and six blocks, while
Emma Clines and
Karlie Kucharczyk had 12 and 10 kills respectively. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay tallied 32 assists and senior
Kendall Yerkes recorded 17 digs.
The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the match and led the entire first set. Their lead increased to 21-14 and ended the set on a service ace. Set two was more of the same as Michigan Tech led 7-1 early. The Huskies would maintain at least a four-point lead for the duration of the set and with the score 21-17, Tech scored the next four points to go up 2-0 in the match.
GVSU came out in set three on the attack and created a 12-6 lead early. Michigan Tech would trim the deficit to three points at 17-14, but the Lakers would answer with a 4-1 run to regain a commanding lead. GVSU would end the set on a kill from Kucharczyk.
The Lakers continued their solid play into set four as they scored the first three points of the set and later led 10-7. Michigan Tech would bounce back and tied the set at 13-13 before scoring three straight points to take a 16-13 lead. GVSU would not cut the deficit anymore and would eventual fall 25-20.
