ASHLAND, Ohio – The Grand Valley State volleyball team dropped a GLIAC match at Ashland on Friday night by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25). The Lakers fall to 13-13 overall and 8-7 in league play, while Ashland improves to 23-6 overall and 12-3 in league play.
GVSU played Ashland close the entire match as they held leads in each of the first three sets and only trailed by five or more points on a few occasions. After the two teams went back and forth much of the first set, the Lakers took a 21-18 lead late, but three straight points by Ashland late gave them the win in set number one.
Ashland held a slight advantage in set two early before GVSU tied the set at 10-10. The Eagles would re-take the lead and extend their advantage to 22-17 and eventual were at set point with the score 24-20. GVSU would answer with three straight points, however a kill by Ashland would end the set.
The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in set three and would hold the lead until late in the set. GVSU led 20-15 when Ashland would start to mount a comeback. The Eagles tied the set at 22-22 and 23-23, but a service ace by senior
Frankie Cavallaro and an attack error by Ashland gave GVSU the set to keep the match alive.
Ashland regained the momentum in set four and opened up a six-point lead. GVSU would trim the deficit to just one at 16-15 before Ashland answered with a 6-1 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Lakers fought until the end, but they come up short as Ashland ended the match on a pair of kills.
Freshman
Karlie Kucharczyk had a team-high 12 kills and added four blocks, while sophomore
Ali Thompson recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 20 digs. Setters
Rachel Jacquay and
Frankie Cavallaro combined for 41 assists and senior
Kendall Yerkes led the team in digs with 21.
GVSU will play at Wayne State tomorrow (Nov. 16) in the regular season finale at 2:00 PM.
