HAMMOND, Ind. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-15) victory over Purdue Northwest in their first GLIAC road match of the season on Friday night in Hammond, Ind. With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in GLIAC play.
GVSU played a complete game and did not trail in the first two sets of the match, while only trailing briefly at the beginning of set three. The Lakers hit a season-high .313 and held the Pride to a minimal attack percentage of .012. GVSU held the edge in every statistical category by a lopsided margin; kills (33-14), aces (5-1), assists (30-13), digs (40-27), and points (42-19).
Freshman
Jaeli Primus hit an outstanding .727 on 11 attacks and eight kills with zero errors. Sophomore Ali Thomson also added eight kills, while freshman
Karlie Kucharczyk chipped in with seven kills and a team-high 10 digs. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay helped pace the attacks with 25 assists.
The Lakers opened set one with an 8-2 lead, but the Pride went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 9-9. GVSU would regain the momentum and take the lead at 12-11 before stretching their lead to 23-14. The Lakers closed out set one on a service ace by freshman
Haley Blaney.
GVSU controlled set two from start to finish. An 11-4 lead had the Lakers out in front early and later increased that lead to 20-11. Leading 24-14, sophomore
Cameryn Brown subbed in and recorded a kill on the following play to end the set.
In set three, PNW would jump out to an early lead at 6-2, however, GVSU quickly tied the set at 7-7 and took a lead at 11-10. The Lakers would go on a 7-1 run to put the set out of reach at 18-11 before winning the match on an attack error by the Pride.
The Lakers will be back in action at 3:00 P.M ET tomorrow on the road against Wisconsin-Parkside.
