GVSU Volleyball sweeps Parkside; Finishes weekend 2-0

The Lakers host nationally ranked Ferris State at home on Friday

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team finished the weekend with a clean sweep after defeating Wisconsin-Parkside in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday in a GLIAC match in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Lakers took down Purdue Northwest last night 3-0 and have now won back-to-back GLIAC matches without dropping a set. GVSU is now 7-8 overall and 3-4 in GLIAC play.

GVSU set their season-high in attack percentage last night against PNW and on Saturday the Lakers put together their second highest percentage of the season at .271. Sophomore Ali Thompson led the attack with 14 kills and a .353 %, redshirt freshman Emma Clines hit .412 with nine kills, and Jaeli Primus also had nine kills with a .333 %. Freshman Karlie Kucharczyk totaled 11 kills, while freshman setter Rachel Jacquay recorded 37 assists. The Lakers held the advantage in kills (50-32), digs (55-43), assists (43-32), and services aces (7-5).

The Lakers did not start the match strong as they found themselves trailing 5-0 through the first five points and Parkside increased their lead to 10-3. After a GVSU timeout, the Lakers scored three straight points and settled into the match, eventually tying the set at 15-15. The two teams traded points and were tied at 19-19 before GVSU took a 22-19 lead on a service ace by freshman Camille Hurta. Clines ended the set with a kill from Jacquay.

The second set began close with multiple ties, but the Lakers would take a lead at 11-10 and go on a 5-0 run to go up 16-10. Thompson would end the set with a kill.

Parkside led 3-0 to start set three but GVSU scored six straight points and took a 6-3 lead. The Rangers would answer and re-take the lead at 10-9, however, the Lakers would go on a 7-2 run to take control of the set at 16-12. GVSU would not give up the lead and ended the match on a bad set by Parkside.

GVSU will be back in action next Friday (Oct. 11) at home against Ferris State in the annual Dig Pink Game.
