GVSU Volleyball sweeps Northwood; Finishes weekend 1-1

The Lakers will participate in the Midwest Region Crossover next weekend in Indianapolis

Allendale, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team bounced back on Saturday after a 3-1 loss to Ferris State on Friday with a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-22, 25-19) over Northwood at the GVSU Fieldhouse in GLIAC play. The Lakers have won three out of their last four matches and now sit 8-9 overall and 4-5 in GLIAC play. Currently, the Lakers are tied for fifth place in the conference with three other teams.
 
This match was all Lakers from start to finish. GVSU led statistically in kills (38-31), aces (9-2), blocks (9-2), points (56-35), assists (37-31), digs (58-53), and attack percentage (.195-.077). The Lakers only trailed three times for the duration of the match and two of which were at 1-0.
 
Sophomore Ali Thompson followed up her 22-kill performance on Friday with a team-high 16 kills, seven digs, five service aces and three total blocks, while freshman Karlie Kucharczyk added nine kills and freshman Jaeli Primus chipped in seven kills. Freshman setter Rachel Jacquay totaled 32 assists and senior Kendall Yerkes led the team in digs with 17.
 
The Lakers scored the first nine points of the match and increased their lead to 15-3. Northwood would go on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 18-10, but GVSU ran the lead back up to 11 points and finished the set on a kill by Kucharczyk.
 
After Northwood went up 1-0 in set two, GVSU scored five straight points and took a commanding lead in the set. The Timerwolves answered with a 5-0 run to take a 15-14 lead, however the Lakers went on a 3-0 run and a 4-0 run take control of the set. Thompson ended the set on a service ace.
 
The third set was evenly played at the beginning with no team taking a lead of more than three points until GVSU scored four straight points to go up 14-11. The Timberwolves would tie the match at 16-16 on a pair of Laker errors, but kills by Kucharczyk and Primus allowed GVSU to re-take the lead. The Lakers scored seven of the final nine points to seal the match in straight sets.
