INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team fell in their first match of the Midwest Region Crossover against Missouri S&T by a score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25). With the loss, the Lakers are now 8-10 overall.
The two teams were fairly even in the team statistics as GVSU led in kills (47-44), assists (43-30), and digs (62-61), while Missouri S&T held the advantage in attack percentage (.141-1.04), aces (9-4), and blocks (11-7).
Freshman
Karlie Kucharczyk recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs, while
Jaeli Primus also had 12 kills and added four total blocks. Freshman setter
Rachel Jacquay tallied 35 assists and sophomore
Ali Thompson had a team-high 17 digs.
GVSU jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the first set, but S&T went on a 6-1 run to overtake the lead at 9-8. The Miners would maintain a lead of 3-5 points until the Lakers cut the deficit to 21-19, but GVSU dropped the set at 25-21.
The Lakers held an early lead once again in set two as they were up 6-1 before forcing a S&T timeout. GVSU's lead grew to 10-2, however the Miners would chip away and come within one point at 17-16. The Lakers then went on a 5-1 run to take 22-17 lead and ended the set on multiple kills by Primus and an attack error.
Set three was closely contested all the way through. The two teams had 16 ties throughout the set and the first lead of more than two points occurred when the Miners took a 19-17 lead. S&T increased their lead to 23-20 and won the set shortly after.
The fourth set was played just as tightly as the third set. GVSU and S&T tied on 14 different points and the lead changed hand on five occasions. The largest lead for either team was two points until S&T took a 23-20 lead, but the Lakers answered and tied the set at 23-23. However, the Miners would score the final two points of the set to win the match.
GVSU will take on #10 Lewis and GLVC-leading Drury tomorrow in day two of the Midwest Region Crossover beginning at 10:00 A.M.
