The Series
• Grand Valley State captured a 49-30 victory over Delta State in the only meeting between the two programs. The Lakers hosted the Statesmen in an NCAA DII Semifinal tilt at Lubbers Stadium in an ESPN2 telecast on Dec. 10, 2006. GVSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but DSU scored 14 consecutive points to tie the game. However, the Lakers took a 28-14 lead into the half and added two more TDs to take a 42-16 lead. Grand Valley State advanced to the NCAA DII National Championship game the following week and claimed the title with a 17-14 win over NW Missouri State. Current head coach
Matt Mitchell was the linebacker coach on that team.
• Grand Valley State is the winningest FBS, FCS and Division II program in the country, boasting a record of 392-142-3 (.732) in 48 years of playing football.
• GVSU has won four NCAA Division II Football National Championships, made 19 playoff appearances, won 17 league titles, captured nine NCAA regional titles, made nine trips to the NCAA DII semifinals and six to the NCAA DII title game.
• Grand Valley State is the only GLIAC team to win at least 12 games three times since 2013 and make two NCAA DII Playoff semifinal appearances.
• GVSU head football coach
Matt Mitchell is second in all-time wins at GVSU with 78. Current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is first with 118 career wins.
• Grand Valley State is 27-20 in road openers, including a 13-4 mark since 2001. Head coach
Matt Mitchell is 4-4 in road openers and 1-1 in road openers when flying to the game under Mitchell.
• After leading the nation in pass defense in 2017 (127.5 yards per game), the Lakers yielded 109 passing yards to Indianapolis in the opener.
• GVSU limited Indianapolis to 215 yards of total offense, including 109 through the air and 106 via the ground.
• The GVSU pass defense has allowed just four TD passes in its last 13 games.
• GVSU allowed Indianapolis 106 rushing yards last week after allowing 386 rushing yards to the Greyhounds in the 2017 season opener.
• The Lakers ranked third nationally in scoring defense in 2017 (13.0 ppg) and gave up just seven in the season-opener to an Indianapolis squad that averaged over 38 points a year ago.
• BALANCED ATTACK - The Laker offense recorded 10 first downs rushing and 12 via the pass versus Indianapolis.
• GVSU ran 70 offensive plays vs. Indianapolis compared to the Greyhounds' 50 plays.

7 plays, 69 yards, 3:57; 10 plays, 80 yards, 4:17; 11 plays, 96 yards, 6:08
• The Laker offense was forced to punt on its four possessions versus Indianapolis, however, GVSU scored on five of its next six possessions, including all five (4 TD/1 FG) that entered the redzone. The Lakers had four drives that consisted of nine plays or more.
• ROAD TRIP - Grand Valley State will head south to Cleveland, Mississippi (782 miles) to take on Delta State, then one week later hit the road again to Marquette, Michigan (414 miles) to take on Northern Michigan.
• Grand Valley State will again face the toughest schedule in Division II football, evidenced by the 2018 ledger having four teams that advanced to the 2017 NCAA DII Playoffs. GVSU opened the season at home versus 2017 GLVC Champion and playoff participant Indianapolis, followed by a road tilt at DII power Delta State the following week (Sept. 8). The Lakers will also host Ferris State (Oct. 13) and Ashland (Nov. 3) at Lubbers Stadium.
