The No. 22 Grand Valley State women's tennis team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio and won, 7-2, in a neutral site match against Division II opponent Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers have now won four consecutive matches and hold a 21-3 overall record.
GVSU started the day off strong and led, 3-0, after they swept the Crimson Hawks in doubles competition. The duo of
Abby Perkins and
Livia Christman tallied an 8-4 win from No. 3 doubles, while
Madison Ballard and
Nicole Heiniger won, 8-6, from the No. 2 doubles position.
Aimee Moccia and
Alexa Sweeney completed the sweep for the Lakers after the pair won 8-5 from the No. 1 position.
In singles competition, IUP gained two points, after Ballard fell 6-0, 6-4, from No. 1 singles position, while Sweeney was also defeated 6-0, 6-3, from the No. 2 slot. Playing from the No. 3 singles position was Moccia, who won 7-6(6), 7-6(0), while Perkins won in three sets after going down in the first set 5-7, before winning the next two 6-4, 6-3.
Olivia Hanover and and Heiniger claimed wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions with scores of 7-5, 6-4, and 7-6(0), 6-3.
Grand Valley State will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9:45 a.m. as they will battle Wilmington University for another non-conference matchup.
