GVSU Women's Tennis Falls to ECU

Results

The #23-ranked Grand Valley State women's tennis team fell to Division I opponent Eastern Carolina by a score of 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon, as it was their first of six matches on their Spring Trip down in Orlando, Fla. The loss drops GVSU to 14-2 on the season, but still holds a 14-0 record when playing Division II competition, as the Pirates improve to 9-4.

In singles competition, the Lakers had a tough time against the Pirates as they were unable to nab a win. Madison Ballard played from the No. 1 singles position and fell to the Celia Ruiz 1-6, 2-6, who is also the 53rd ranked Division I player in the nation. Alexa Sweeney and Aimee Moccia fought hard from the No. 2 and No. 3 singles slots, but came up short by scores of 2-6, 0-6, and 1-6, 1-6. Abby Perkins (2-6, 0-6), Olivia Hanover (0-6, 1-6) and Nicole Heiniger (2-6, 2-6) also came up short from the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions.

Playing Division I rules, doubles competition counts only as one point towards the team score, meaning whoever wins at least two double matches wins the points. ECU claimed another point as they won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

The Lakers will be back tomorrow at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. for an 8 a.m. match against Findlay.
