ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State men's basketball team fell, 74-63, to the No. 19 Ashland Eagles Thursday night in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU falls to 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in GLIAC play while Ashland improves to 7-0 and 3-0 in the league.
The Lakers came out with stingy defense, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first three minutes, opening up an 8-0 lead. That would balloon to a 14-4 edge eight minutes into the game before Ashland started whittling away the deficit to eventually tie it up at 18-18. Ashland would then go on a 14-0 run to open up a double-digit lead. The Lakers would trail by double-digits most of the game, until late threes from
Jake Van Tubbergen and
Hunter Hale brought the Lakers within three with two minutes left, but GVSU would get no closer.
Jeremiah Ferguson's 16 points and Van Tubbergen's 14 led the Laker offense while
Kindred Williams pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Hale had four steals in the loss and Ferguson led the team with three assists. The Lakers shot 35.1% from the field as a team while Ashland shot 45% from the floor. GVSU went 6-21 from three and 17-27 from the free throw line and were out-rebound 41-33 for the game.
GVSU will look to bounce back Satutrday (Dec. 8) when they host the Wayne State Warriors at 8:00 PM. GVSUL:akers.com will provide links to live video, stats and audio (ESPN 96.1) while @GVSUBasketball provides live Twitter updates.
