Box Score #14 Grand Valley State claimed a 2-0 victory over #10 Minnesota State in a Sunday afternoon matchup. The Lakers are now 2-2 on the season as MSU falls to 2-1. Grand Valley State will host Ashland and Tiffin in non-conference matchups on Friday (Sept. 15) and Sunday (Sept. 17).

The Lakers knew coming into the match that the Mavericks were a talented and physical team, and it held true for the entire 90 minutes. MSU committed six fouls in the first and four more in the second. GVSU would also have nine fouls called on them during the match, three in the first period and six in the second period.

"Minnesota State is a very physical and talented team and we knew we would have our hands full and that proved to the case, especially in the first half," said head coach
Jeff Hosler. "They seemed to be all over us and they had some good goal scoring chances, but fortunately our back four and our goalkeeper Jenn (Steinaway) were up for the test."

Minnesota State pressured Grand Valley State throughout the game, but junior
Jennifer Steinaway and the Laker defense wouldn't allow the Mavericks to score. Steinaway tallied eight saves and recorded her second shutout of the season.

The teams bombarded each other with shots in the first half, as MSU recorded nine shots and GVSU recorded six, however neither team would goal and game was tied 0-0 after one period of action.

 After MSU carried play in the first half, the Lakers responded and carried their style of play for the final 45 minutes.

Cook would then be in the right place at the right time for the Lakers in the 83
rd minute, as she netted her first career goal and gave GVSU a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers denied several scoring attempts in the final six minutes of play to clinch the win. Both teams recorded 15 shots and eight shots on goal for the match. Steinaway recorded eight saves and MSU's goalkeepers (Alexa Rabune) tallied six saves.
