Grand Valley State women's golfers continue to have a strong showing at the 101st Michigan Women's Amateur at Saginaw Country Club, as three Lakers advanced to the 'Sweet 16' round of match play on Wednesday (July 13). The top highlight of the entire competition on Wednesday was
Mackenzie Blomberg carding her first career hole-in-one, helping her pull an upset and move to the round of 16 along with Laker teammate
Katie Chipman and incoming GVSU freshman Olivia Reed.
Blomberg, who just completed her sophomore year, notched the first ace of her playing career during her match play round against 12-seed Heather Fortushniak. As the 21st seed, she used a 7-iron on the par-3 10th hole, tallying the hole-in-one to extend her lead over Fortushniak in a match Blomberg would eventually win, 4 and 3. Blomberg will face 5-seed Nichole Cox in Thursday's round of 16, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
After earning All-GLIAC First Team honors as a freshman, Chipman received the fourth seed in match play with a tie for third place during the two qualifying rounds earlier in the week. She defeated 29-seed Jami Laude 3 & 2 on Wednesday to advance to the round of 16 where she'll square off with her new teammate next season, Reed. As the 13th seed, Reed was victorious over 20-seed Kelsey McDougall 2 & 1 to form the all-GVSU matchup on Thursday.
23-seed
Samantha Moss fell to 10th seed Natalie Johnson 1-up in the round of 32, which ends the competition for the Laker junior.
The round of 16 and the quarterfinals will be played on Thursday, with the semifinals and championship taking place on Friday.
