ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team defeated the Timberwolves of Northwood in their final regular season home match by an 8-1 margin. The win moves the Lakers to 16-6 on the season and 6-1 in GLIAC play with just under two weeks left until the conference tournament (Apr. 21-23).
GVSU was able to sweep doubles play after they won all three of the opening matches. The duo of
Zach Phillips and Alex Van de Steenoven played out of the No. 1 spot and were able to defeat Austin Woody and David Reinauer by a score of 8-5. Playing out of the No. 2 position was
Jack Heiniger and Sebastian Lescoulie who took down Kobus Sauerman and Francois Sauerman. Rounding out doubles competition was the matchup between
Nicholas Urban and
Jack Geissler and Hayden Drury and Ivan Medvinskyi which saw the Lakers victorious once again with an 8-1 victory.
Lescoulie led the way in singles play as he defeated Woody 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Out of the No. 3 spot was Geissler who was able to take down Francois Sauerman by a 1-6, 7-5, 14-12 margin. Van de Steenoven was able to grab a victory out of the No. 4 spot as he took down Reinauer by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Also winning their singles matches were Heiniger who defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-3 and Urban who took down his Northwood foe 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.
The Lakers will take the week off before traveling to Ohio to face off against Tiffin (4/14) and Walsh (4/15) in their regular season finale.
