Lakers Drop First GLIAC Tournament Match to Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team dropped their GLIAC Tournament semifinal match to Northwood by a score of 5-0. The loss drops the Lakers to 18-7 on the year and puts them in the third place match against Hillsdale on Sunday, April 23 at 8:15 am.

Northwood was able to take an early 3-0 lead in the first to five match as they swept doubles play. The duo of Zach Phillips and Alex Van de Steenoven dropped their No. 1 doubles match in close 8-5 decision to Austin Woody and David Reinauer. Also dropping their match 8-5 was the pairing of Sebastian Lescoulie and Jack Heiniger as they fell to Kobus and Francois Sauerman.

In singles play, the first two matches to finish fell in favor of the Timberwolves and stopped any comeback hopes for the Lakers. Van de Steenoven fell in the No. 4 singles spot by a score of 6-2, 6-1 to Reinauer while Nicholas Urban fell to Ivan Medvynskyi by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

The Lakers currently sit in fourth place in the Division II Midwest Regional Rankings, with the top seven teams from each region advancing to NCAA postseason play. The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Show will be airing on Tuesday, April 25 at 8:30 pm and can be viewed here.
