AKRON, Ohio - The Grand Valley State Lakers women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend as they fell to Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then defeated Wilmington (Deleware). The split moves the Lakers to 20-8 on the season as they head into their last match of the regular season against Davenport on Thursday, April 6.
The Laker dropped their first match of the weekend against Indiana University of Pennsylvania by a score of 5-4 on Saturday (4/1). The Lakers were only able to pull out one win in doubles play as the duo of
Alexa Sweeney and
Aimee Moccia defeated Raquel Gonzalez and Rachel Wood by a score of 8-4.
In singles play,
Alexa Sweeney won her match against Luise Von Agris out of the No. 2 spot by a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Out of the No. 4 spot was
Aimee Moccia who defeated Rachel Wood by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Also winning her match was
Nicole Heiniger who took down Sophie Butland by a 6-0, 7-5 margin.
The Lakers bounced back on Sunday, April 3 as they took down Wilmington University by a score of 5-0. The duo of
Madison Ballard and
Rachel Sumner defeated Anushka Sathe and Laura Gil by a score of 8-3. The Laker pair of
Aimee Moccia and
Alexa Sweeney took down Begona Gomer and Andrea Ribalta by a 8-1 margin. Winning the final doubles match was the duo of
Abby Perkins and
Livia Christman as they took out Sabrina Blasi-Smith and Milica Knezevic by a score fo 8-0.
Securing the victory for the Lakers was
Aimee Moccia out of the No. 4 singles spot and Livia Christman out of the No. 5 spot. Moccia won her match against Ribalta by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Christman was able to defeat Blasi-Smith by a score of 6-0, 6-0. After securing the victory with the fifth team point, the rest of the singles matches went unfinished for the 5-0 final score.
