ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State (4-7, 3-1 GLIAC) women's lacrosse team was able to grab a big win on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Allendale with a 22-2 victory over the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The victory was the largest margin of victory for the Lakers on the year as GVSU received goals from 17 different players on the day.
GVSU started the day on an eight goal run and did not allow Northern Michigan to advance into the Laker zone until the score was 8-0. The eight goal run was started by
Abbi O'Neal and continued by
Carly Shisler,
Meghan Datema,
Kelley Fitzgerald,
Ashley Bailey, and
Maria D'Angelo, who scored a pair of goals early on. After a Wildcat goal at 21:38, the Lakers struck back with four goals in just over 3 minutes from the sticks of
Ashley Bailey, D'Angelo, Fitzgerald, and
Bailey Ellsworth to give the Lakers a 12-1 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the first half.
Ally Barian and
Sarah Stagaard would give GVSU their final goals of the first half to enter the break with a 14-1 lead.
The Lakers would kick off the scoring in the second half, with goals from
Kelly Leibovitz,
Elizabeth Yeomans, and
Aimee Hite from the 28:20 mark to the 22:52 mark of the second half, taking a 17-1 lead. Northern Michigan would get their second goal of the game at 19:15 from Graison Ringlever, who scored both goals for the Wildcats on the day. GVSU would get goals from five different individuals to close out the game on a five goal run to stretch the margin of victory to 20 goals.
Elizabeth Grisko, D'Angelo,
Kira Dosenberry,
Annie Yost, and
Adrianna Smith would score goals in the final 16 minutes for GVSU.
Leading GVSU in goals on the day was D'Angelo, who provided four goals in her efforts. Fitzgerald was the top point-getter for the Lakers, as the sophomore from Powell, Ohio scored eight points on the day with two goals and six assists. Hite and Barian led the Lakers in draw controls with three apiece, while Datema led the way in ground ball recoveries.
Sarah Zwilsky was the winning goalie for the Lakers, although three different goalies saw action on the day as
Brianna DeMilia played for just over 14 minutes and
Madison Barnes played the entire second half of the game for the Lakers.
