GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team took down the Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday night (3/30) by a score of 6-1. The win improves the Lakers to 19-7 overall with just two matches left in the regular season. Per the latest rankings from ITA Tennis, the Lakers currently sit at #47 nationally and #5 in the Midwest Region.
Due to inclement weather, the matches were moved inside and had to be pushed back a few hours which resulted in two of the singles matches to be unfinished after GVSU secured the victory.
In doubles play, the duo of
Madison Ballard and
Rachel Sumner secured the victory in the No. 1 spot, as they defeated Alex Mella and Elizabeth Bauss by a score of 8-5. Earning the other doubles victory for the Lakers was
Aimee Moccia and
Alexa Sweeney as they took down Ellen Hornett and Kelsey Vessels (8-3).
Out of the No. 1 singles spot for the Lakers was Ballard who beat Rachel Bottorff by score of 6-1, 7-5. Playing in the No. 2 spot was
Alexa Sweeney who defeated Mella 6-0, 6-1. Also winning their matches was Moccia and Heiniger who defeated their Wildcat foes by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-3, respectively.
The Lakers will be back in action on Saturday, April 1 as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to face off against the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
