Lakers Battle with Aquinas, Win 5-4

GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Laker men's tennis team edged out the Saints of Aquinas University by a close score of 5-4 Friday night (2/17) at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club in Grandville, Mich. The slim victory pushes the Laker's to 2-0 on the season while the Saint's fall to 2-2.

Singles play would turn out to be the difference-maker for the Laker's, as they were only able to nab one win in doubles competition. The lone victory came from the duo of Alex van de Steenoven and Sebastien Lescoulie who defeated Jordan Lomas and Will Buurma at the No. 2 doubles position by a score of 8-6.

On the singles side of play, the Laker's were lead by the middle of the lineup, as the Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 positions were able to gather wins and secure the slim victory. In the No. 2 spot, Lescoulie was able to down Lomas in a swift 6-3, 6-2 victory. Freshman Jack Geissler came out in the No. 3 spot and earned a hard fought victory over Chase Peery by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-3. Also winning their singles matches were van de Steenoven and Jack Heiniger who took down their opponents, both with scores of 6-3, 6-1.

The Laker's will take a day off but will be back in action on Sunday (2/19) against the Panthers of Davenport University. That match will also be played at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club.
