The Grand Valley State women's tennis team won the GLIAC regular season title in a thrilling 5-4 decision against Northwood on Sunday evening. The Lakers finished the regular season undefeated with a 10-0 record.
The Lakers and Timberwolves started with doubles to open the contest, where the Lakers tallied only one point. GVSU won the first match of the contest, as Abby Perkins and Livia Christman had a dominating performance winning 8-0 from No. 3 doubles. However, Northwood claimed the next two doubles matches. Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney were defeated in a tough 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles, followed by another challenging match from the No. 2 pairing, where Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger fell 8-4.
In singles action, Northwood added to their lead after Moccia fell in a 6-2, 6-1 decision from the No. 3 spot. However, the Lakers slowly made their comeback winning the next four of five matches.
Perkins won at the No. 4 spot 6-4, 6-0, followed by another victory at No. 1 singles, where Ballard won 6-4, 6-4. The Laker women kept on winning as Sweeney tallied another point for GVSU and won 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 spot, followed by another win at the No. 6 singles position where Christman tallied the Lakers fifth point of the contest and won 6-0, 6-1. Northwood claimed one more point at No. 5 singles, as Olivia Hanover fell in a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
The Lakers next contest is the GLIAC Tennis Tournament at Northwood University, where the Laker women are the No. 1 seed in the tournament. GVSU will play eighth seed Ashland to open the contest on Friday (Oct. 27th).
