No. 3 Lakers clinch 13th straight GLIAC regular season title with 2-0 win

Lakers earn 14th straight win after blanking Michigan Tech

Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The sun rises in the East, sets in the West, and the Grand Valley State Lakers soccer team wins the GLIAC regular season title. A 2-0 victory Friday night by No. 3 GVSU at Michigan Tech clinched at least a share of the conference regular season championship, the 13th straight year the Lakers have accomplished the feat. The win also secured the Lakers as the number one seed in the GLIAC Tournament and gives GVSU the right to host the final two rounds of the tournament in Allendale in early November.

Ava Cook had the game-winner Friday for the Lakers (14-2-0, 8-0-0 GLIAC), receiving a through ball from Tara Lierman and beating the keeper as she was coming off her line. It was Cook's ninth goal of the season and fifth consecutive match the freshman has found the back of the net. Cook's goal was the only tally in the first half despite eight shots on target by GVSU in the period. The Lakers got breathing room in the second half when Sara Stevens took a pass from Tracey McCoy and turned it into her second goal of the season.

The Lakers outshot Michigan Tech (5-8-1, 2-5-1 GLIAC) 18-5 in the match, including a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. Jennifer Steinaway made the save on her only opportunity for GVSU while the Huskies keeper, Amanda Young, made 10 saves to keep Michigan Tech close. Gabriella Mencotti took a match-high four shots, but the Division II goals leader was kept off the score sheet for the second straight match. GVSU committed 17 fouls in the match and Cook was booked with a yellow card in the final minutes. The Huskies were whistled for seven fouls.

The Lakers finish conference play Sunday (Oct. 22) at Northern Michigan at 1:00 PM then end the regular season in a non-conference bout with regionally ranked Ferris State next Friday (Oct. 27). A win by GVSU Sunday will earn the Lakers an outright regular season championship, as will one loss this weekend by Ashland. The Lakers will host the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament against the eight-seed on Halloween night.
