Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. – It was the same story, just a different star, for the No. 4 Grand Valley State Lakers soccer team in a 9-0 victory over the Purdue-Northwest Pride Friday night at the GVSU Soccer Field.
Tara Lierman netted her first career hat trick, scoring three times while dishing out an assist, to lead the way while
Katrina Giantsopoulos had a pair of goals to help the cause. The Lakers have now won 12 consecutive matches, including 11 shutouts.
Grand Valley State (12-2, 6-0) took 51 shots in the win, including 26 on target. The shot total is the second-highest in a single match in the history of the program (Oct. 3, 2014 vs. Malone – 53). The Lakers did not concede a single shot by the Pride (0-11, 0-7 GLIAC) in the match. The Lakers have scored 29 goals in their last four games, an offensive explosion since a 1-0 win over Ferris State just two weeks ago.
"We talk about efficiency a lot. We've been a lot better in front of goal," said head coach
Jeff Hosler. "I don't think we were overly efficient today, but that's partly because Purdue-Northwest's keeper was fantastic. But efficiency has been the key for us."
Gianna Parlove scored for the second time in as many games in the 8' for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Gabriella Mencotti combined with Lierman to set up the early go-ahead goal. Then Lierman would get her first goal of the night, taking a centering feed from
Hannah Klingerman and rolling the ball past the diving keeper.
In the 21' the Lakers struck again when
Tracey McCoy scored her third goal of the season after a lobbed insert from Parlove for smash into the back of the net. Nine minutes later
Lindsay Ebeling beat her defender off the dribble to have a good look on frame and tucked away her first goal of the season, giving the Lakers a 4-0 lead at the break.
Lierman found the back of the net again one minute into the second period, heading home a cross by McCoy, to extend the lead then scored again, this time unassisted thanks to a strong run down the left flank, in the 59' to claim her first career hat trick. Lierman, who has scored in four of her last five matches, made it four straight games a Laker has netted a hat trick after Mencotti's three straight heading into the night.
"
Tara Lierman had a heck of a day. Her first career hat trick, and all of them were great goals," said Hosler. "She's really come along offensively for us and that's a good sign."
Ava Cook added to the lead in the 68' when she sprinted up from her left back position and riffled a 30-foot shot into the opposite upper-90 for a jaw-dropping strike. The freshman now has seven goals on the year and has scored in three straight matches. Giantsopoulos scored the last two goals of the night to seal the deal for Grand Valley State, dribbling around defenders in the box for an unassisted goal in the 71' then, ten minutes later, finished a centering feed from Klingerman.
The Lakers are back in action on Sunday (Oct. 15) when they host the Davenport Panthers for Senior Day at 1:00 PM. Seven seniors will be honored at the GVSU Soccer Field before the final home regular season match of the 2017 campaign.
