Lakers Host Wayne State in Make-up GLIAC Doubleheader

Live Stats l Video Stream l Game Notes

ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Grand Valley State baseball team accomplished an uneasy feat by sweeping the University of Findlay in a four game series on April 23rd-24th.  The Lakers then took it one step further, sweeping Hillsdale in a four game series at home, holding the highest scoring offense in the GLIAC below four runs a game.

Grand Valley State returns to mid-week GLIAC action on Wednesday afternoon, when it hosts Wayne State for a make-up doubleheader at GVSU Baseball Field. The games were scheduled to be played at home on April 10th, but inclement weather postponed the games.

GVSU comes into the matchup blazing hot, as they have not lost since a 9-6 road defeat to Northwood on April 20th and are 9-0 since then. The Warriors come in off of a 3-1 series win over Findlay last weekend, getting back to winning ways after being swept by Northwood the weekend before. The Warriors are 24-19 on the season, and 16-10 in the conference, but are just 8-10 in divisional games this season.

On the season, the Warriors have had good success on offense, as they are fourth in the conference in batting average (.312) and slugging percentage (.449) and lead the conference by a wide margin in doubles (108). In the two games between the teams in April, the Warriors showed the hitting potential of their offense, as they defeated the Lakers 16-3 in the second game behind the force of four doubles and four triples.

For the Lakers, their best stretch of the season has been the conference season. After coming out of the Florida trip with an unremarkable  7-6-1 record, the Lakers have lost just six games since, while winning 21 contests, including a 12-2 home record.

During that stretch, the Lakers have been in and won a number of close games, as evidenced by the 15 saves on the season by Laker closer Matt Williams, which leads all of Division II. GVSU is 6-2 on the season in one run games, 4-2 in two run games and is 10-4-1 in games in which they score 3-5 runs. Additionally, when the Lakers have held their opponents to 3-5 runs, they are 13-3-1. GVSU has made the most of the runs they've gotten, as they have not lost a single game this season in which they led after the sixth inning (23-0).

Traditionally this season, the Lakers have been slow out of the gate in games, often yielding an early lead to their opponents, before heavily outscoring teams in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Additionally, the Lakers have excelled at limiting their opponents offensively through strategic pitching. The Lakers have yielded the third least home runs to opponents this season, and are 8-2 in games against the top power hitting teams in the conference (Hillsdale, Ashland & Walsh). Laker pitchers have shut down high powered offenses this season without issuing excessive walks, and the team is ranked 22nd in Division II in number of total walks allowed, with just over 3.00 per game.

Having split in the earlier series this season with the Warriors, the Lakers will look to take at least one of the two games at home to keep their GLIAC series record blemish free. The Lakers have yet to lose a series to any GLIAC foe and have won five total conference series this season.
