Results

DETROIT, Mich. - #37 Grand Valley State needed every point they could get in a 5-4 win over Wayne State in a conference and regional match at the Wayne State Outdoor Tennis Courts. The win puts the Lakers at 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC, while the Warriors fall to 9-10 and 4-1 in the GLIAC.

Grand Valley State, who was ranked third in the Midwest Region in the first NCAA Division II regional rankings of the season, got off to a rocky start by dropping all three doubles matches to their opponents by a combined score of 25-13. Although they lost their matches, the No. 1 pairing Zach Phillips/Alex van de Steenoven and the No. 2 pairing Jack Heiniger/Sebastien Lescoulie played very hard, with Phillips/Steenoven losing 8-5 and Heiniger/Lescoulie losing 9-7.

Grand Valley State turned things around in singles play by winning five of the six matches to take the five team points and the win over the Warriors. Steenoven took match No. 1 (6-0, 6-3), Lescoulie won match No. 3 (6-3, 6-3), Heiniger got the team point for the Lakers in match No. 4 in three sets (6-7, 6-2, 6-4), Andrew Bole won match No. 5 (6-4, 6-3), and Nicholas Urban won match No. 6 (6-2, 7-6 (7-5)) to give the Lakers their 12th win of the season and help them move into second place in the GLIAC.

The Laker men are back in action on Sunday (Apr. 17) when they travel north to take on Northwood (7-5, 3-1 GLIAC) at 2 pm.
